August 19th through August 25th

August 19th through August 25th: This blog post will be quite short because almost every day was the same.  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday after the temple, and Thursday I installed the vinyl flooring, 72 boxes, 3000lbs, and just over 1000 square feet.  Chris worked her three days, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  Thursday after work she and John B. painted all of the base shoe.

TV/front room. I started in this room.
Moved to the dinning room. Kitchen and dinning room byond.
Next worked my way towards the music/craft room. Looking from the music room past the front door/entry to the TV room byond.
Then down the hall and then connected with the flooring coming from the dinning room into the kitchen.  Hall between the front door and kitchen.

Next it was into the music/craft room.
I finished up with the hall from the kitchen to the back door.  John B. painting the toe kicks and base shoe.
Friday I installed the base shoe.  For those of you who are wondering what base shoe is--it is a piece of wood that is installed at the bottom of baseboard to cover the gap between a wood or vinyl floor and the baseboard.   Vinyl needs to have a gap of 3/8 inch for expansion and contraction.
Base shoe had to be installed around everything except the jambs and casings.
I installed all the casing and jambs with a gap at the floor so that the flooring could slide under the casing and jams.  It worked out great.
We also had a visit from Chris’ sister-in-law, Pam Cornwall.  She came down from Washington for education week at BYU.  It was so fun to see and talk with her. Saturday I worked on getting some electrical done for the appliances that are coming on Monday. I also went to the dump and then installed the transition moldings between the bath, laundry and the vinyl floor, the stair cap, and the end cap on three exterior doors. John B. spent the day caulking the newly installed base shoe, puttying the nail holes, and painting one last coat on the toe kicks and base shoe.  We went to dinner at Paul and Liz Belnap’s home.  They are our dear friends.  Paul and Liz and I went to high school together and Paul and I toured Europe together after high school.  Paul is recovering from back surgery and taking care of his 11 head of cattle.  It was so much fun to see them and get caught up on everything.
Our good friends, Paul and Liz Belnap.
This is Paul's hay field.  He has some cowboy/farmer in him.

Sunday we went to church and then went to dinner at Alex and Charlotte’s home.  The floor looks fabulous and the end is in sight.

August 12th through August 18th

August 12th through August 18thMonday Mom went to work and I finished taping off the cabinets and everything else we did not want to get paint on.  I realized we did not account for how we were going to finish the ends of the backsplash and so I had to install some more moldings so that we can die the tile back splash into something.  Then putty the nail holes, sand and caulk so that they also would be ready to paint.  There are always so many little details that need to be done before you can start spraying paint.  Badger, Moose and Ellie helped me putty the nail holes and then sand the 65 rollout trays, so they would also be ready to paint.
Cabinets masked off and the music/craft room is ready for the modings to be painted.

Tuesday I finally felt like everything was ready to paint and I got the first coat of paint on the moldings by 11:00am.  Mom went to work and I started painting the rollout trays.  Then I started over and painted the moldings again.  I finished up at 6:30pm.

Friday I got all the moldings taped off so that the walls could be painted and I got the first coat of paint on the walls.  I also got the marble cut for the laundry room and the corner cabinet.  Mom went over and tended Bryce and Kate's kids in the afternoon.  She took them along with a few other grandkids to a new park by Bountiful High and they made boats and then floated them in the creek.  The kids had a blast.  We went over to Bryce and Kate’s house for dinner and to celebrate our grandson, Stanford’s birthday.  He turned 9.

We had lots of company.
What a week!  This week you can really see big changes and you can envision what the remodel is going to look like.

August 5th through August 11th

August 5th through August 11th: Monday Chris was still tending James and Kirstin’s kids in American Fork and I worked on the house.  I installed moldings on the wall of the music/craft room, some moldings in the laundry to have a place to put hooks to hang wet towels, and I built out where the TV will go so that the cords can be hidden.  Moose helped me get all of the rollout tray parts machined and ready for assembly.   I drove down to James’ house and brought mom home. James and Kirstin had a wonderful weekend in San Diego with 2 other couples from their neighborhood.
Moldings on the wall in the music/craft room.
Rail for hooks in the laundry room.
TV built out.
Tuesday I built and installed the shelves for the bookcases at the side of the fireplace and then assembled rollout trays or at least I assembled the sides and back and fronts. Mom went to work in the afternoon.  Badger and Moose helped me get the rollout tray boxes ready for painting.  After assembling the boxes we had to rout the inside and outside edges of the top of the sides and back and fronts and then sand them.  John B. stayed up all night and finished the caulking.  He gets more than an honorable mention for his help this week.
Shelves made and installed for the bookcases.
Boxes built for the rollout trays.
Wednesday we got up early and went to our temple shift.  This is our first week back after the 2 week maintenance closure.  We had a nice shift.  John B. worked from home and then at noon he left for a backpacking trip into the High Uintahs with some high school friends.  They had a 7 mile hike before they could camp for the first night.  I am sure he slept well.  They do this every year.  I spent the afternoon sanding nail holes, setting nails and puttying nail holes that were missed by the kids.  Thursday Mom went to a conference to get some Continuing Education Credits.  I went into Salt Lake and got some melamine to finish the bottoms for the rollout trays.  I also stopped and got an 8 foot prefabricated Carrara marble counter top for the laundry room and the corner cabinet going into the TV room.  I finished cutting the 65 bottoms and the parts for the drawers under the window seats.  I am officially done with the table saw and chop saw.  I need to stop making saw dust and get everything cleaned up so that I can spray paint the moldings.  I tried to paint the rollout try boxes, but got rained on and had to bring everything onto the porch.  I spent the rest of the day sanding nail holes and getting all the moldings ready to be painted.  Moose, Badger and I went up and helped set up the table and chairs for a neighborhood party at the church.  We went to the Neighborhood Luau and had some great smoked pork.  We came home and Ellie and Badger had made a cake to celebrate Moose’s 14th birthday.  So we all had cake for desert.
Bottoms cut for the rollout trays.
Neighborhood Luau
Happy Birthday Moose.
Friday Chris started cleaning the TV, entryway, and music/craft room by sweeping, vacuuming, washing the walls and mopping the floors.  Everything needs to be really dust free in order to use an airless paint sprayer.  I spent the day putting and sanding nail holes.  I don’t even want to try and guess how many nail holes there are in the more than 2700 feet of moldings that have gone into this remodel.  In the afternoon, I did get the rollout trays painted and only got rained out once.  I had to move everything again.  Ellie and Moose masked off the TV room and it is now ready to paint the moldings.
It's raining.
We had to move everything because of the rain.
Rain and the first set of boxes had to be moved to the porch.
Finally, the sun came out and I got all the boxes for the rollout trays primed.
Doors set up ready for paint.
Saturday mom and Jill worked washing down walls and cleaning up all the saw dust.  I installed a final change order of more moldings in the laundry room and got all the moldings sanded and ready for paint.  I painted primer on the new sheetrock in the front part of the house.  We went to see a movie with our good friends, Wally and Martha Cooper.  It was about half in Chinese with English subtitles and was filmed mostly in China.  It brought back a lot great memories of our two years in China.  Mom went late to the adult session of Stake Conference.
New moldings in the laundry room.
New sheetrock primed.
Cabinets and windows masked off.

Sunday we got up and drove to Brighton Ski Resort and walked around Silver Lake.  It is so beautiful and peaceful there.
Silver Lake with the sun coming up.
Mom and I at Silver Lake, Brighton.
We came home and I made Swedish pancakes for everyone.  We went to Stake Conference at 2:00pm, President Eyring presided and spoke about prophets. We then had a great roast beef dinner.  I only got a little bit of the painting done this week, but we are making progress and next week we should be able to get all the painting finished.
